Waste oil tank compliance
If you have a plastic waste oil tank, you need to read this…
On 11 November 2013, a new Code of Practice for the management and handling of waste oil was released (HSNOCOP 63), and this included a number of changes for the way workshops store their waste oil.
Many of the points applicable to workshops have been previously covered in this article, however part of the code of practice included a deadline for some plastic tanks to be removed from service.
Likewise it also set a maximum life span for plastic tanks.
Here it is:
The 5 year deadline was on 11 November 2018.
Many sites have had their waste oil storage upgraded since 2013, however, those that still have old plastic tanks need to make it the highest priority to confirm they are compliant to minimise their exposure to risk (both financially and environmentally) in the event of an incident or spill, and upgrade immediately if required.
Any non-bunded plastic or steel waste oil tanks still out there should be upgraded as soon as possible also, as these do not comply with the code. The above 5 year period did not apply to non-bunded tanks as these have been non-compliant for many years.
There have been cases recently where companies have received fines of over $50K for non-compliant waste oil storage, so it appears that waste oil storage is an area which is now receiving more attention from the authorities than in past years.
