One of the biggest killers of pneumatic equipment is moisture (condensate) in the incoming air supply. This is why a water trap filter is required very close to the inlet of the connected pneumatic equipment.
It is rarely enough protection to have a single water trap filter at the compressor, as this will only remove some of the moisture, and the colder the air is when it is flowing through the filter, the more effective the moisture removal will be.
As the air is often warm when leaving the compressor, a lot of moisture gets through and then condenses in the air lines.
Therefore a filter such as this handy combination unit is usually required at the location of the pneumatic equipment.
